Background

A world leader in telecom infrastructure with 10000 global employees had a key dependence on the success of its L&D operations. The organization, which prides itself in innovation, was looking to make a gradual shift from traditional L&D processes to a process which is optimized with digital tools. At this point they came across the kPoint video platform.

Problems

Although the organization had a large budget for L&D, they realized that running a traditional classroom_based training program had many challenges. Their subject matter experts were getting stretched due to regular training requirements as well as frequent travel to cater to globally distributed locations. Senior employees too found it hard to manage their work schedules to attend classroom training at a predefined time and location.Managing logistics and administrative work related to training was proving to be taxing. Apart from classroom training, there was also the challenge of capturing and distributing tacit knowledge of key employees – which would play a big part in developing a competitive edge.

Solution

With kPoint,the organization made a plan to record their classroom sessions and make those available only as recorded videos. Whenever a new training was planned, L&D team used the adage, ‘why repeat when you can record?’ With video recordings of the trainings, employees not only got a classroom like experience, but they could undergo the trainings anytime, anywhere, at their own pace. The administrative hassle in planning the trainings was entirely reduced. And the L&D team could still measure and monitor the learning of employees by utilizing analytics of video viewing. kPoint collected the video viewing data of employees and sent it to the LMS.
This way, the L&D team could get a consolidated view of the learning analytics of employees, whether learning happened in the LMS or directly on the video platform. kPoint could not only host training content created from external content vendors, but also allow the trainers and SMEs to record their own trainings and tacit knowledge in a video. These videos were searchable and allowed all the employees to dive into the video knowledge repository and find the right content when they needed it.

Outcomes

The organization’s video portal today hosts 58 channels – which indicate the types of trainings available. 1000s of person hours of training happens over videos each month. According to their own estimates, this translates to $70,000 of direct cost savings per year. More than 130 employees have added and shared knowledge videos on kPoint helping organization make their invaluable tacit knowledge accessible and searchable. Inspired by L&D success, other functions such as corporate communications and HR also started using videos for their communications.
